In 1988 , former Indonesian Foreign Minister Prof. Mochtar Kusuma-Atmadja formed the Nusantara Chamber Orchestra aas a pilot project of Yayasan Nusantara Jaya, a foundation dedicated to supporting the development of arts and culture in Indonesia.

The Nusantara Chamber Orchestra regularly performed from 1988 to 1996 under the direction of the late Music Director and Conductor Yazeed Djamin. Several renowned musicians and soloist form Indonesia and abroad performed with the Nusantara Symphony Orchestra.

In 1998, the foundation was renamed Yayasan Nusantara under the leadership of Mrs. Herawati Diah. The foundation is now led by Mrs. Pia Alisjahbana. The board includes : Miranda S. Goeltom, Dedi. S Panigoro, Mila Mawira.

Nusantara Symphony Orchestra is still supervised by Yayasan NusantaraThe Foundation also aims to improve its activities in carrying out its mission to support the development of classical music and other forms of art in general.

The Nusantara Symphony Orchestra is the supervising body for the development of the music. The support and partnership of many parties with similar vision will enable them to effectively reach their goal.
